Parallel Lives Part 1

I sat stiff at my desk, studying for another test I didn’t feel at all prepared for. My friend said it’s normal. That no one feels ready for college. This felt different. I felt like I was an imposter. That I was not nearly smart enough for school. I’d gotten a full ride scholarship due to my performance on the field, but my grades had never been all that stellar. Quitting wasn’t an option of course, my dad would never let me. Unable to focus, I looked over and noticed that the condensation from my drink had formed a ring on my desk. I bought it with the hope it would give me the energy to keep going longer. I had yet to touch it. The more I pushed to study, the less I felt I remembered. I pushed my chair back from the desk and spun slowly around in it. Completing the loop something new caught my eye. There was a sealed envelope in front of my drink that hadn’t been there a moment ago. It had no address, no stamp, only my own name written in what could have been my own hand writing. Fear wriggled through me, who had been in my room? How had I missed this? My hands moved of their own accord and soon the envelope was open. Inside was a simple letter written in the same familiar script.

Hello Steven,

I know this may seem strange, and I know you have too much going on right now to handle one more thing, but I slipped up and I need help only you can provide. I’m you, well sort of. I’m a Steven from another dimension, a parallel one to your own. From what I can tell everything is the same in our dimensions except where I was given an experiment kit for kids on our 8th birthday you were given a football.

There is more, but I stop reading. I don’t know who this prankster is, but I didn’t have the time to play their games. I crumpled up the note and tossed it and the envelope into the trash. I pulled myself back up to the desk and returned to my studies, taking a quick drink of my soda. It was flat. I sighed.

This is the second section of a large story that I’m writing with roughly a week between each section. I have no idea where the story is going yet but in part that means you also will have no idea. What does Steven have in mind for Steven? We will all just have to sit back and find out.
